Prologue to The Assassin’s Tale
It was a dark night, one of the darkest of nights. The moon was new, and the clouds covered the stars, all the torches in the castle were out, all except one that is, the torch directly outside King Iodus’ chambers. The guards were away getting food, a mistake they will later regret, for little did they know, when they left they were not alone. In the ventilation shaft there hid a slender man, dressed in all black, and wearing a long coat that hung just above his ankles. His name was Akar, and the person this tale is about.
The Assassin’s Tale
As he climbed his way out of the shaft, he heard footsteps coming towards him. He looked around for a place to hide, but found only a wooden barrel. He hopped in just in time to hear the door next to him open. Out stepped the most beautiful woman Akar has ever laid eyes on. The torch’s light was beaming on her like a light from heaven. Her name was Azhure and she was the princess of the neighboring kingdom of Xander, the kingdom that hired Akar to kill King Iodus. She was tall and slim, wearing a flowing red and white nightgown, dawning the symbol of Xander, a gryphon poised to attack. She had long, jet-black hair, which was up in a bun and laced with white frills. She stepped out into the hall and looked around to see if anyone was around. She glanced over towards the barrel before she sped of towards the back end of the castle.
Akar waited for a bit to see if she would come back, and good thing he did because three minutes later she returned. With a sigh of relief, Akar slowly stepped out of the barrel and made his way towards the King’s chambers. He had to find a way in without awakening the king and queen, but there seemed to be no one inside the room, except the old wooden door that stood in front of him. He started to remember that the king who hired him mentioned the only other way to get into the chamber was a small tunnel that was made for the king and his family to escape from, but the entrance to it was hidden somewhere on the grounds of the palace. Suddenly, Azhure’s door opened and Akar was caught, or at least he thought. She stopped dead in her tracks and stared at Akar with frightened eyes. She slowly moved her eyes and examined him very closely. As her eyes moved down his body she noticed the long black coat and knew right off the bat who he was.
“Akar?” she whispered, not wanting to wake anyone, “is that you?”
“Yes, Azhure,” he murmured, barely audible, “it is I. What are you doing here?”
“I was sent by my father to help you with your task at hand,” she answered. “My father has sent me this,” she held out her hand to reveal a small silver key lined with golden strands, “I know not the use, but Father told me to give it to you,” she placed the key into his hand.
“But how did you come to be staying at the palace?” he asked skeptically.
“Iodus was my dad’s best friend before he went against my dad and ended up getting Barnibus, my brother, killed. He owes my father for saving his life during the Great War of the Countries, so he’s letting me stay while my parents are visiting Bale,” she answered swiftly. “Now go before the guards come back, you must finish the job before dawn.”
Akar stared at her and nodded then as fast as he could he climbed back into the ventilation shaft and hurried outside. As he neared the exit of the shaft he heard voices, the voices of the guards getting back from the pub. He had no time to wait for them to get back into the castle for dawn was mere hours away. He popped his head out of the shaft and saw that they were standing about fifty feet from the hole he crept in from, and was now crawling back out of. He slowly pulled himself out of the crevice and inched his way towards the two unsuspecting guards, and slowly unsheathed his knives he had hidden in his boots. As he got close enough to the guards he tapped them both on the shoulder, and as they turned around one was met with one of Akar’s knives across the throat, while the other went through the second guards bottom jaw and stapled his mouth shut.
With the guards out of the way, Akar started searching for the entrance to the passage leading into the king’s chamber. He searched for about twenty minutes before he finally found an entrance hidden in the vines on the side of the castle. As he opened up the door, hundreds of bats flew out towards him and soared into the sky. He looked into the tunnel and could see not four feet in front of him, for it was pitch black and covered in spider webs. He had no choice, he had to enter or he could never face himself or go back to Xander again. He grabbed a near by torch and entered the tunnel.
He was walking for what seemed like an hour before he finally reached a ladder at the end. He grabbed the ladder and took a deep breath to calm his shaking limbs and slowly started to climb. At the top of the ladder he reached a trap door that he knew led to his destination, and to his sleeping prey. He placed one of his hands on the cold, steel, ring that was the handle and pushed up with all his might. He stuck out his head slowly, but was met with five falchions pointed at him, and he realized it was not Iodus’ assassination which he was sent here for, but his own.
